Successful Winter School on AI, Media & Democracy in Leipzig

From December 2nd to 4th, 2024, the joint Winter School “Artificial Intelligence, Media and Democracy” took place in Leipzig, an international cooperation between the University of Leipzig, University of Padua (Italy) and the Sapir Academic College (Israel). The event brought together experts, students and interested parties from various countries to discuss current issues and challenges in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), media and democracy.

The Winter School was organized by an interdisciplinary team of renowned academics: Prof. Dr. Stephanie Schiedermair and Prof. Dr. Johannes Eichenhofer from the University of Leipzig, Prof. Dr. Elena Buoso from the University of Padua as well as Prof. Dr. Orna Alyagon Darr and Prof. Dr. Joseph David from Sapir Academic College. The program included a series of exciting lectures that deepened the understanding of the role of AI in democratic processes. Topics such as “The AI Act from an Italian Perspective” and “The Use of AI in the Judiciary as a Problem of Democracy” stimulated intensive discussions and an interdisciplinary exchange.

Particular thanks go to all the organizers, speakers and participants, whose commitment contributed significantly to the success of the Winter School. The excellent cooperation with the partner institutions, the University of Padua and Sapir Academic College, which made this event possible in the first place, should also be emphasized. The Winter School was more than an academic event - it offered a platform for dialog between science, culture and practice. This format ties in with the Winter School „Artificial Rights? Legal Challenges in the Era of A.I.“, which took place at the University of Padua at the beginning of the year, and will certainly be continued in the future to strengthen international cooperation and interdisciplinary exchange on artificial intelligence and its social challenges.
