SECAI On-site Meeting Marks Start of the School's Third Year
The annual SECAI On-site Meeting provides an internal platform for PIs and PhD students to present their research, network, and discuss future research and collaborations. For the new cohort of PhD-students, it was the first opportunity to get in touch with the SECAI Network, with four of them leaving an impression by presenting their current research. Additionally, the Leipziger Debattier- & Disputations-Gesellschaft e.V. offered a rhetorical workshop to give researchers the opportunity to learn how to present their research results in an impactful way.
Alongside the talks by the new PhD candidates, there was a poster session covering the current work of the Graduate School. Moreover, Sebastian Rudolph and Stephanie Schiedermair gave keynotes on important aspects of AI: Sebastian Rudolph introduced the idea of Standpoint Logic, a simple but versatile multimodal logic ‘add-on’ for existing KR languages, intended for the integrated representation of domain knowledge in terms of different standpoints – which can be hierarchically organised, combined, or relate to each other. This is particularly important to enable AI to handle equally valid yet contradicting views of the world. Stephanie Schiedermair, on the other hand, spoke on the current status of regulating AI, especially in the light of the European AI Act. She contemplate that AI is facing the ‘Collingridge’ dilemma: during the stage of ideation, regulating influence is easy, but there is a lack of information about the consequences of new technologies. Once the technology has spread worldwide and information is available, however, it becomes increasingly difficult to exert influence.
While the participants were introduced to the content of SECAI's research, an additional focus of this year’s event was on how to the debate. After all, the ability to present research results in a good rhetorical manner is of great importance for being influential in the academic discourse and beyond. Therefore the Leipziger Debattier- & Disputations-Gesellschaft e.V. was invited to provide an introduction to argumentation techniques and rhetorical style.
